Savannah River Meanderings has been described as "charming," "unique," "like a time capsule carefully preserving an era that is no more," "a book that ties past and present together in a style that harkens back to Bartram." Come join that old river rat, Bill Powell, as he takes the reader on a leisurely fishing trip down the Middle Savannah. Based his memoirs from over 70 years ago, Bill guides us through the swamps and hidden waterways of Burke County to the shoals of Augusta. Get your fishing rod out or just sit back and reminisce about a day on the river.
I grew up in Burke County Georgia and spent many a weekend picnicking on Beaverdam Creek Bridge, going to barbecues at the old Savannah River Boat Club and taking family drives through the "Big Woods" of Girard. I have always loved history, writing and tramping through the woods. Although I am now a school psychologist in the Boston area, I will always be a child of the South and of the Central Savannah River Area.
William Henry Powell grew up in Burke County, Georgia, around the turn of the twentieth century. His ancestral home was on the banks of the river at Griffin's Landing. His father and grandfather before him were riverboat men who plied the Savannah in the majestic paddlewheelers that ruled those waters for a brief yet sparkling moment in time.
Mabry Johnson is my niece and the primary illustrator for the book. She has been an art student for many years and works in various mediums. Her whimsical drawings and soft watercolors truly bring the words to life and add another dimension to this special volume. Mabry lives in the Atlanta area.
